East against the West? Representations of war in egodocuments of British and Russian participants of Crimean War 1853-1856. Doctoral thesis Mgr. et Mgr. Petr Wohlmuth ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis adheres to genre of historical anthropology of war and military. It draws on two theoretical sources. The first consists of paradigms of cultural and social anthropol- ogy, more specifically symbolic historical anthropology in the tradition of Geertz, Darnton, Sahlins and others. The second represents the cultural history of war in the tradition of Kee- gan, Hanson, Lynn or Isabel Hull. The research question is focused on the culture of war during the Crimean War, especially during the Crimean campaign and siege and defense of Sevastopol in 1854/55, as its variables were represented in egodocuments of its Russian and British participants. Crimean War has been the subject of many historiographic texts, but most of them were essentially conservative, relying on national, ideological and civilizational labeling instead of deeper analysis. This doctoral thesis analyses in detail first the formal or- der of the above-mentioned culture of war, but more importantly, it analyses using the method of thick description its logico-meaningful relations, the hierarchy of levels of mean- ing in the sense how the culture of war...
The Foreign Policy of the Habsburg Monarchy during the Crimean War
Fraňková, Martina ; Skřivan, Aleš (advisor) ; Županič, Jan (referee)
The thesis is focused on presentation and evaluation of the development of foreign policy of the Habsburg Monarchy during the Crimean War in years 1853/4-1856. Its traditional position between Russia and the Western powers and complicated complex of internal problems prevented Austria from being involved with either side of the conflict. The policy of neutrality, adopted by Prussia and the German Confederation during the war, on the other hand, could not ensure sufficient protection of the Austrian interests concerning the Eastern Question. For this reason, the Habsburg Monarchy decided for its own independent policy, based on escalating pressure on Russia and attempts at restricting the war aims of Great Britain and France to an acceptable limit, and thus achieve a peace treaty as soon as possible to prevent the extension of the war and a potential wave of revolutions. The main instrument of this policy was the menace of Austrian military action against Russia and on the other side maintaining of hope of the Western powers for this action. German policy of Austria concentrated on defending its position within the German Confederation and using of German allies for demonstrations directed against Russia, which, however, were not very effective due to the reluctunce of the German states. The...

SKOPCOVÁ, Tereza
The bachelor thesis called Florence Nightingale versus a nurse of the 21st century is worked out mainly on a theoretical level. It has an informational character which goal is understandable and logical interpretation of Florence Nightingale and a nurse of the 21st century. We did not focus only on the most important character of the nursing in history but also on the development of the profession of a nurse from the medieval up to presence, status of women in society in chosen periods and on modification of moral values and assumptions which differ nurses through the centuries. To gain all the information, it was needed to study Czech and foreign reference literature. I have worked with technical magazines, for example a universal magazine Kontakt, the magazine Nurse and the magazine Florence. While I was writing the thesis I also used the information gained through reference foreign databases PubMed, Scopus and EBSCO. This bachelor thesis should clarify the phenomenon of the development of the nurse profession. It should be understandable for general public and should create a real view on nurses in the history and in the new millennium. It is also dedicated to future nurses not only to realize the historical milestones of nursing but as a teaching aid for the subject: The nursing theory. Every educated nurse should orientate in history of the nursing profession to appreciate the effort of all known and unknown characters of the nursing history. The thesis provides the general overview about the development of the nursing profession during the last thousand years. We tried to show that the development, especially the development of the nursing profession, was determined mainly by the status of women in the society and moral values of the given society.
